Russetstar is the one who killed the former clan leader, Beechstar, and deputy, Thistlewhisker, as well as Thistlewhisker's mate, Sweetberry. However, he framed Shadowclaw for it, and as such the other tom was banished from MarshClan. The clan chose him then to be their leader, for having -caught- Shadowclaw, and because he was the most senior warrior in the clan. However, StarClan never intended for Russetstar to be leader of MarshClan and so they did not grant him his nine lives. None of the clan are aware of this fact except for the Medicine Cat, who happens to be his daughter, Sweetwillow, and who he's forcing to work with him. He's threatened to kill her mother, Bluemist, and sister, Berryblossom, if she says anything to anyone.
He despises Shadowclaw's kits, Thunderpaw and Goldenpaw, and is just waiting for a chance to catch them in a mistake. Which is why he chose Thunderpaw as his own apprentice.
He is very abusive to his apprentice, often unsheathing his claws while training him. He wants to make certain that Thunderpaw knows who's in charge.
He took Bluemist as his mate, after mentoring her, because he was impressed with her. And he knew she was in love with him.
In his own way he loves Bluemist, but he's had several flings with Ivytangle, Bluemist's sister, behind her back.

Shadowclaw isn't a traitor. The current leader of MarshClan, Russetstar, is the real traitor. Russetstar is power-hungry and ruthless, he wanted to be Clan Leader to the point that he'd go to any lengths to gain the position. Russetstar, killed the clan's former deputy, Thistlewhisker, and because Sweetberry witnessed the crime he killed her as well. Beechstar, the former MarshClan Leader came across the scene just as Russetstar finished off Sweetberry. Russetstar, at the time being Russetfang, attacked Beechstar. Shadowclaw, who'd been hunting close by heard the fighting and rushed to help his leader. He arrived just as Russetfang bit into Beechstar's throat. Beechstar, having been on his last life, died. Shadowclaw and Russetfang then began to fight as well, and when the rest of the clan came upon the scene Russetfang told them that Shadowclaw had murdered Beechstar, Thistlewhisker, and Sweetberry. Shadowclaw tried to defend himself, but because Russetfang was a senior warrior they believed him. So, Russetfang was chosen by the clan to become leader, since both the leader and deputy were dead. Russetstar banished Shadowclaw, and the clan chased him from their territory. He has since been slinking around, trying to find a way to prove his innocence.
He still loves his mate, Lakeshine, and their two kits, Thunderpaw and Goldenpaw, deeply.
